This year the Rockaways get their first Scarecrow Showdown, a joint project of the Borough and Township recreation departments. The scarecrows are set to hang around Park Lake by Monday, Oct. 5. That's nearly three weeks before the Halloween Spooktacular on Saturday, Oct. 24. Voting on the scarecrows doesn't open until the day after the Spooktacular. So for 2026, Halloween in the Rockaways isn't a single Saturday. It runs on a clock that starts at the lake in early October, peaks on the 24th, and ends with a Facebook poll.
The details of that clock show where to be and when.
Built to Survive Three Weeks Outdoors
The Showdown rules read like they were written by someone who has watched October weather on the lake. Each scarecrow has to be no bigger than 3 feet tall by 2 feet wide, weigh less than 10 pounds, and be fully weatherproof, with no paper or cardboard allowed. There's no electricity at the display, so anything that lights up has to run on batteries. Every entry gets weighed and measured when it's dropped off, and entries that don't meet the rules are disqualified. The towns also keep the right to take down any scarecrow that falls apart, is vandalized, or becomes a hazard.
Those limits are what make the long display possible. A small, light, weatherproof scarecrow can hang on the lake path from early October through the last week of the month. The contest is open only to Borough and Township residents. Businesses and organizations can't enter, and spots were capped at 48 families across both towns, first come, first served. As of Sept. 12, Rockaway News reported 15 of the 48 spots filled. Finished scarecrows were due Sept. 28 at either municipal building, so the final count will show up on the path rather than in a press release.
Judging stays anonymous: each family's name is swapped for a registration number for the whole contest. Awards cover three categories, Funniest, Scariest and Most Original, with prizes for the top three plus runner-up spots and honorable mentions. In practice, a weekday walk around Park Lake at 8 Mount Hope Road becomes a free preview of the season, and the voting comes later.
The Night the Scarecrows Are Waiting For
All that build-up leads to the Dark Lake Spooktacular, which the Township calendar lists for Oct. 24 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Park Lake. The 2026 program hasn't been posted yet. The 2024 flyer, billed as "Chapter V," shows how the event has run:
A safe and fun halloween event where children and families can walk around Park Lake, trick or treat at decorated booths and tables from local families and businesses and play at various points of attractions.
That same flyer set a stroller-friendly hour from 5:30 to 6:30, made foot traffic around the path one-way, asked people to leave pets at home, and asked families to bring a bag of candy for the main tent, dropped off by the beach entrance. Those were the 2024 rules. Watch for the 2026 flyer before assuming they all carry over.
The booths come from the community itself. The Rockaway Kiwanis Club has written about hosting a decorated table where it handed out safety materials and reflective bracelets to the first 300 children, plus candy for more than 2,000. The Kiwanis write-up isn't dated, but it gives a sense of the scale. At the Township Council meeting after last year's event, one council member called the 2025 Spooktacular one of the largest ever and estimated attendance at three or four thousand people.
With crowds that size on a one-way loop, the scarecrows matter in a second way. This year the people walking the path will pass the resident-made entries they may already have seen on a quieter weekday. Facebook voting opens the next day, Sunday, Oct. 25, while the walk is still fresh in people's minds.
Oct. 24 Doesn't End at the Lake
The Spooktacular wraps up at 8:30. Half an hour earlier, the Unleashed Society's third annual Halloween Trunk or Treat Car Show opens to the public at Rockaway Lanes, 365 U.S. Route 46. The two events overlap by 30 minutes, so the evening plays out as a handoff:
- 5:00 p.m. Show cars can start arriving at Rockaway Lanes. Late arrivals won't be let in once the event starts, because children will be walking through for trunk-or-treat.
- 5:30 p.m. The Spooktacular opens at Park Lake. Going by the 2024 flyer, the first hour is the stroller-friendly window.
- 8:00 p.m. The car show opens to the public. Spectators get in free, but parking is limited.
- 8:30 p.m. The Spooktacular ends at the lake.
- 11:30 p.m. The car show ends on Route 46.
Rockaway Lanes is giving the night its own Halloween twist. Organizers are asking people to decorate their trunks or come in costume, guests can bring candy for the kids, and trophies go to Best in Show, Best in Theme, Best Costume, Crowd Favorite and Deepest Team. Inside, Rockaway Lanes will sell food, snacks and drinks, and a DJ will play music. Teams listed for the night include Mobbin, Clean Culture and Team Risk Takerz. Cars entering the competition need a show pass, listed at $20 plus New Jersey tax and a service fee.
So one Saturday covers two settings. Families with young kids can do the lake path early in the evening. Anyone who likes cars can head over to Route 46 as the lake winds down.
The Borough's Front-Yard Week Lands Right Before It
The lake isn't the only place on display. Rockaway Borough is running its own Halloween house-decorating contest, timed to finish just before the Spooktacular. Registration closes Oct. 15, decorated homes are on display Oct. 16 through 20, and winners are announced Oct. 22.
Put that next to the scarecrow schedule and the order makes sense. The lake display goes up by Oct. 5. Decorated Borough homes are judged in the middle of the month. Contest winners are named two days before the Spooktacular, and the scarecrow voting starts the day after it. Anyone driving through the Borough in the third week of October gets a self-guided tour without needing a map.
One thing to plan around on those drives: Morris County closed Beach Street to through traffic on or about Aug. 13 to replace the bridge deck. Work was scheduled for weekdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a signed detour of about 1.75 miles. Rockaway News reported the job was expected to take about three months, so the closure may still be in place during the October displays.
The Rest of the October Calendar, in Order
Several other events fill in around the lake and the Oct. 24 handoff. Some of them have registration deadlines that come well before the event itself.

The Oct. 17 cleanup at Mt. Hope Pond and Lake Ames falls a week before the Spooktacular crowd arrives at Park Lake. At last year's post-Spooktacular council meeting, the same council member reported that he and his wife had worked on Mount Hope Pond. He estimated his trash bag weighed about 100 pounds and listed what was in it: fishing supplies, cigarettes, beer bottles and car parts. The "What's It Worth?" night is put on by the Borough's Historical Committee. The Committee also runs the Rockaway Borough Historical Museum at 199 West Main St., which lists a Nov. 29 open house from 1 to 3 p.m., the next stop on the calendar once Halloween is over.
On Oct. 30, Rockaway Townsquare at 301 Mount Hope Ave. hosts its daytime goodie-bag event, and the Township's seniors' party runs that evening at White Meadow Lake Country Club. The scarecrows will have been up for more than three weeks by then. The Facebook poll that picks the winners opens Oct. 25.
Halloween in the Rockaways now plays out on lake paths, front lawns and Main Street blocks for most of October. When your house is one of the decorated ones on the walking route, you see firsthand how your street looks to people passing through. If you'd like to know how that translates into value, Anne Henderson is glad to talk Rockaway with you any time.
